The proud of being Andaluz / El orgullo de ser andaluz

I can’t leave this day flee away without writing a word for my beloved community. To be precise, Autonomic Community -names appear to be really important around here. You’ll be wondering right now why do I say this for, just in case you’re smart enough to get caught for my message – joking. Ok, I explain myself:
Vale, me explico:
The 28th of February 1980 the Andalucía’s population decided by referendum it wanted to be considered at the same range the ‘historical communities’ (read here: basically País Vasco and Cataluña) were, and as a direct consequence to become one of the ‘First Grade Autonomies’, which would be able to develop competencies and work by themselves quicker. To be fair, that’s a really poor explanation for what it really meant, so let’s regard it as a draft. Paraphrasing, we celebrate this date as commemoration of the day the people from the South, so-far-oppressed, woke up and claimed for their rights and at the same time were recognized as a unity – Andalucía.
From that very moment the eight provinces would move forward holding hands. Almería, Cádiz, Córdoba, Huelva, Granada, Jaén, Málaga, Sevilla. All of them beat the tough test they were asked to… no actually that’s not true. Almería didn’t, was supposed to reach a certain 50% and it just approached to 48%. Luckily, our politicians appeared being smart enough for once and left it be. It had been a really depressing period for this zone until Franco died, and his mentality was maybe too deep in some people consciousness. But I guess the eastern province in Andalucía will never regret such decision – as a proof of this, Canal Sur, the community channel, gets great share's rates all over this territory.
Anyway the important thing is we need a day to remember who we are, why we should be proud of ourselves, accepting our myths and stereotypes as they were the best ones. Another incise here: in Spain Andalucía’s people are considered somehow lazy, too funny and self-enjoyable – abroad this vision has overridden to the whole nation. I’m not even going to bother bringing this down, I expect you to understand this is an unfair overview which don’t resemble the reality.
Blas Infante, the Green and White flag, flamenco, the hot, the sand and the sea, the olives and its oil… Some of those elements are maybe patronizing, but all of them truly flame in my heart and in every real ‘andaluz's’ soul. Let’s leave beside our differences and, as we did a day as today 31 years ago, let’s walk together, holding hands and forgetting our fears towards a crisis-less close future. And I promise, as Almería didn’t, we will never regret.
Without embarrassment or copying Modesto Barragan in his great intervention few days ago in the ‘Universidad de Sevilla’, and actually doing it, I’m attaching a carnival song that completely moves me. Yesterday, Aunque diga Blas Infante (Although Blas Infante say).
Yesterday, Aunque diga Blas Infante.

Sofy Oksanen, The Purge / La Purga, Sofy Oksanen

Two countries historically and culturally related but which current realities could hardly be more different. The Finnish progress, the European mentality –if such thing even exists-, the development and success in one of the safer countries worldwide stands just opposite the misery, the secrets either the recent history's turmoil of the suffering Estonian population. Both worlds can be mixed, and they actually are in just one woman. An amazing one I would say. Her name is Sofy Oksanen and she posses this weird eccentricity that always catches me.

She was born in Finland to a Finnish father and an Estonian mother. Appears like the proper Camden Town's inhabitant: spotless black clothes and jet-blue hair surrounding one of those strangely beautiful faces. Some massive features outlined by powerful make up give her that crazed kind of looking the artists usually wear. And somehow she is, her last book "Purge" won the 2010 European Best Novel Award –to name just one of the prices she have deserved - and have become a best-seller itself. Filled up with violence, secrets and cruel details it pictures up the Estonian latter (even remaining) whole situation. Based on her grandmother´s memories, Purge started as a theatre play, but its characters fascinated her so much that she decided to further explore it and a novel -a really accurate one- came up.

The story takes place in 1992. To keep it personal, during this year I was four years old, and in Spain two massive events –Barcelona’s Olympic Games and Seville’s Universal Exposition - were pushing the brand-new democratic society up. Around my little tiny world the 92’s Expo meant a huge improvement in many fields but the one I can work out now is our self-image – maybe is the one I want to make relevant by this moment. Therefore, somehow in a more important level, the way the rest of the planet figured my insignificant country was modified. A modern society with a big smile and a bigger hug was ready to receive the welcome tourism.

At the other side of Europe, in a little Baltic country somewhere in the North-East of the Old Continent, the Sovietic Union had been a long shadow and the Berlin Wall’s fall was still relatively recent. As Oksanen narrates along her last book pages, outside its limits Estonia was nothing but a small fly around a stinky amount of rubbish (ok, this is probably a bit exaggerated, but the figure of speech is working out, isn’t it?). Expression Freedom, Equality or minority’s caring were notions which made no sense at all for a washed-brain population – indeed, a communist one. The USSR had influenced their subconscious too much to be forgotten just because a wall was broken down. Censure and strict control were much more a reality.

Even the mail was checked those days: "My mother and my relatives had a code: they made marks around the sentences to change the meaning all the way around", she said, during an interview for El País at Helsinki. These words are barely bearable for a potential journalist like me. I can hardly add anything else, but deeply recommend to read a piece of her writing and to be aware of a one of the few real talents that the great public recognizes nowadays. I need to thank you Sofy due to light a candle at the end of a very long and dark tunnel for me.

What we know and what we don't about the terrorism in Spain / Qué sabemos y qué no sobre el terrorismo en España

This lines aim to be a draft of the terrorism whole situation in Spain. Within the last thirty years, this country has suffered the violence and the fear from ETA. Nevertheless, abroad this story's depiction  has been, and somewhere still, very diverse. Some countries worked out the romantic idea of a cluster fighting against the dictator for the freedom. Nothing further to resemble the real turmoil of the society, even if the spanish population can withstand and struggle for its welfare bravely.

The País Vasco is a region located in the North edge of Spain, limiting with France, known as The Only One the arab's couldn't conquer. To approach to their reality we should deal with the double-headed shape the terrorist organization ETA states. Its hierachy consists of a 'military arm' and a 'political arm'. Although they actually murder people to aim independence, their political party -named 'abertzale'- for years was allowed to join the elections and eventually had representation in councils. While the army terrified the population, the 'abertzale' party took part on the public decisions. Therefore in 2007, one of the greatest democratic efforts this country have ever done, the Parliament issued the 'Parties law', which doesn't allow the violence-supporting parties to be in the electoral process. As a direct consecuence, the ETA political arm got illegalized and the organization lost most of its strength.

No more violence - Stop the violence
Furthermore, the spanish police in colaboration with other european forces - above all the french one - have managed to imprison a good number of ETA's head members in the last few years. Nowadays the terrorist group is seriously reduced, although there is a high rate of new generation relief. Thus, they eager to join the public spaces  once again, and these days' headlines talk about the brand-new party they brought out. Sortu, as it's named, apparently follows the democratic rules of fair play.

But, are they really aiming to give up the violence and the terror? They assert that they refuse this behaviour, but don't condemn it at all. So there comes the doubt whether they want the peace or not. However uncertain the situation is, reachs a peak on terrorist-fighting in Spain, and our goverment can't let it go so easily, but handle it extremely carefully.

As a tip, I let here one of the Lehendakaris Muertos greatest hits, "ETA deja alguna discoteca" (ETA, leave any club).

Today is a sad day. I'm going to leave this world without beating one of the "thousand things I want to do before I die". I will never see one of the The White Stripes' live concerts. Yesterday they made public their separation. The band by Jack and Meg White will never ever rock the stages again. Sorry, i'm about tears.

Nunca veré en concierto a The White Stripes.
When I listened to their music for the very first time they uttered me. I guess also to everyone else, as is a really surprising thing how just two people with guitar and drums can make such beauty and art. Jack is an amazing musician, his personality will always fill up his fans expectancies. But Meg... she's specially special. Her drum style, as simple as it seems, is certainly efective. Furthermore, she declared several times she have never attended percusion lessons. But probably no one can understand Jack White the way she did.

See you later, London / Nos vemos, Londres

I have been thinking about this post for long. I wanted to write something, a kind of bye-bye or see you later to my not-too-secret true love. I didn't find the words yet though... Now it's been a month in Spain, and there wasn't even a day when I didn't remember the city which changed my life.

Everything started last year. I decided to spend the summer in England with some of my bests friends, to have fun and to improve my English language skills. Then, two separated facts took place in few weeks. The main link I had with my homeland got broken, and I fell in love with The City. It's streets and avenues surprised me, the enviroment caught me and, for sure, Camden Town amazed myself from the start to the end.

As a direct consecuence, and after going through family and friends complains, no one could separate me and the city of my dreams anymore. I found a job, got a new room and the visits of my beloved parents and friends gave me the strength enough to resist the endless English's fall strokes.

Pretty happy I was, when life obstacles came once again and I couldn't refuse to go back to my own country anymore. So I got myself ready for the sadness that means an unwanted decision. Not without some problems, I took a plane back to my home. Once I was here I have to say is not that bad. The food is amazing, so is the weather. My family,  above all my little tiny brother and sister, make my days happier than they were supposed to be. My friends already made themselfs sure I wasn't regreting I came back.

Nevertheless I miss so much... EVERYTHING. The Hawley Arms (best pub ever), sambuca shots, my friends, colleagues and 'mates', the music and the gigs, my personal affaires... But the thing I miss the most is, no doubts on it, my-English-self. As I was happier and more motivated, I found myself more confident (if it's even possible), feeling better with my deffects - part time alcoholism included. Being, at the end of the day, a better person (that was easy).

I don´t want to bore with this emotional shit anymore, just to express how grateful am I for this oportunity life brought me. And to say thanks to everyone who, in this side or the other of Europe, contributed to draw this smile on my face. Thanks! And... see you later, bitches!

I really love to travel, but when I do always appears in my mind, what about the time we spend, as my dad would say, in itinere? Although I´m pretty young (almost a century´s quarter, not that young anymore) I have spent lots of hours between trains, aeroplanes and buses for circunstances not so far from my own desire. And I always think the same, what for those dead minutes, those who belong between a city and the next one, hold in the air. Are they lost moments, thrown in a bin, or just the price to pay for visiting a new place? Is worth such journey to admire for a little tiny while a beautiful landscape, to hold a meanwhile conversation or to make few-hours-friends, friends on a train? Maybe even to plan a murder, as in the Hitchcock movie.

In that very moment the train comes out a tunnel and there it is: the sunrise by the italian coast, plenty of Mediterranean and some little fishing boats. Yes, it is worth, indeed.

Jonhn Lennon, Abbey Road and The Beatles / John Lennon, Abbey Road y The Beatles

Mark Chapman, a 25-year-old crazed fan, shot John Lennon four times in the back 30 years ago outside the former Beatle´s home in New York. This crime shocked the world, and today still taking the breath away of those who loved him. His widow, Yoko Ono, said "he has given so much to the world (...) On this tragic anniversary, please join me in remembering John."

The most of the events to honour the singer and political activist are being celebrated in Liverpool, The Beatle´s home town, by the time I write this lines. Also tributes are to be paid to mark the 30th anniversary of his murder opposite Lennon´s appartment in New york City, where he was shot.

In London, if there´s a place where to gather around, it is Abbey Road. Abbey Road is the 11th studio album of The Beatles, but the street where it was recorded in too. Along the year, tourists and fans trek around to copy the most famous picture of the road. That was one of the first things I did when I arrived London - no doubts. To be fair, it was crowded, and the fluent traffic did not allow us to take a decent picture crossing the street. Also the location have changed a lot with the time. But anyway was fun to feel "The Beatles spirit".

Within all this sentimental rememberance of the former Beatle, I guess a quick visit to the place is pretty much the best to do in London these days. Overall if you are around the Regent´s Park (five minutes walking distance) and you want to perform your own tribute. I would love to play The Beatles in my i-Pod  and run away towards the place, but eventually i´m stuck in the library, and i will work all the evening. So if someone reads this post and has enough energy and love for one of the bests bands ever, please listen Love Me Do for me at the corner!
