Sherlock

Terrific three part mini-series. Good image treatment, mystery creating and attention catching. I find a couple of quite simple mistakes: as the most of the BBC series based in London deliberately avoids the fact that nobody is English in that bloody city. I understand as a British channel tries its best but even the tramps have a British accent – seriously.  Furthermore, the floor is always wet and full of puddles but it is never raining.

Tremenda mini serie de tres partes. Buen tratamiento de imagen, creación de misterio y captación de atención. Encuentro un par de errores simples: como la mayoría de las series de la BBC basadas en Londres elude el hecho de que nadie es inglés en esa maldita ciudad. Entiendo que como cadena británica la BBC hace lo mejor que puede, pero hasta los vagabundos tienen acento británico- en serio. Además, el suelo siempre está mojado y lleno de charcos pero nunca llueve.

However, the main character (Benedict Cumberbatch) is gorgeous, in the most extensive meaning of the adjective. His pale face, clean blue eyes and jet dark curls hanging on his forehead plus his wide range of surprisingly quick gesture give him the necessary deeply intelligent look. Even Watson (Martin Freeman) does great, but somehow I’d rather pictured him up taller and bigger than Sherlock instead of all the way around.

De todas formas, el personaje protagonista (Benedict Cumberbatch) es precioso en el más extenso sentido del adjetivo. Su pálido rostro, limpios ojos azules y negros rizos dispuestos alrededor de su frente más su amplia gama de sorprendentemente rápidos gestos le dan el profundamente inteligente ‘look’ necesario. Siquiera Watson (Martin Freeman) lo hace muy bien, aunque me hubiera imaginado al doctor más alto y grande que Sherlock en lugar de al revés.

A bit confusing sometimes: the story line is not totally clear although perfectly executed. The initial duration for the screenplay should have been, and was in the pilot, around 50 minutes. But in its eventual realization the BBC extended it until the hour and a half – and those are a lot of minutes to be filled up. So there are some sub-plots forcedly related and not very believable sometimes. Clearly suffers the main sickness of current TV shows, being obliged to lengthen longer when they work for the main audience.

Es un poco confusa a veces: el argumento no es del todo claro aunque perfectamente ejecutado. La duración inicial para el guión debía ser de unos 50 minutos. Pero en su realización final la BBC lo extendió hasta la hora y media. Y esos son muchos minutos que rellenar. Eso crea algunas tramas secundarias que se relacionan forzosamente y no de forma muy creíble en ocasiones. Claramente sufre el principal mal de las series de hoy en día, obligadas a prolongarse cuando funcionan para una audiencia mayoritaria.

Very few extensive moral issues are to be delivered, just the old shameless Holmes’ figure being hold between the good and the evil. But it appears certainly closer to the ‘right side’ and undoubtedly opposed to the –sometimes overacted- madness and evilness on earth. To be watched for the pleasure of being watched, not for those who are seeking new philosophical inspiration.

Muy pocas cuestiones morales que extraer, sólo la vieja figura de Holmes sostenida entre el bien y el mal. Pero aparece siempre más cercana al ‘lado correcto’ y sin dudas opuesta a la –a veces sobreactuada - locura y maldad preexistente. Para ser vista sólo por el placer de verla, no para aquellos que estén buscando nuevas inspiraciones filosóficas. 

The series is involved in a very British politically correct touch so common in the BBC. The drug issue is solved with a very poor mention and nicotine patches. Genius and disappointing at the same time. Overall I quite enjoyed it, and recommend everyone to take his/her time to go through it paying attention. It is a shame we have to wait to catch the expected second part of the series. Quick, download it, before the Spanish authorities rip off the sense of our lives!

La serie está envuelta con un toque británico políticamente correcto tan común en la BBC. El asunto de las drogas lo solventan con una pobre mención y parches de nicotina. Genial y decepcionante al mismo tiempo. Pero sobre todo me ha gustado bastante, y recomiendo a todo el mundo que tome un tiempo para verla prestando atención. Es una pena que haya que esperar para la segunda parte. Rápido, descárgalo, antes de que las autoridades nos quiten el sentido de nuestras vidas!
