The European Court of Civil Rights awarded 23,000 euros (approximately 20,000 pounds) in damages to a Basque separatist leader (Arnaldo Otegui)  who was sentenced to a year in prison for calling Spain's King Juan Carlos 'the chief of torturers.' I can’t even believe this really happened, for me is a huge notice of how the law and the human judge can be wrong.

El Tribunal Europeo de los Derechos Humanos ha indemnizado con 23,000 euros por daños al líder separatista vasco Arnaldo Otegui quien fue condenado a un año de prisión por llamar al rey Juan Carlos “jefe de los torturadores”. Ni siquiera puedo creer que esto haya pasado realmente, para mí es una gran advertencia de cómo la ley y el juicio humano pueden ser erróneos.

 I’m not a monarchy-lover; more like a republican to be honest. But this country owes the King what we are today: without him we could had ended up in another dictatorship and not the European Union, either the NATO would have cared about us – we don’t have oil other than the olive one. So we protect him, our Constitution does, of course! Why shouldn’t we defend him from the separatists, terrorists and liars who want to break down the society we took such an effort to build?

No soy una amante de la monarquía, más bien republicana para ser honestos. Pero este país le debe al Rey lo que somos hoy: sin él podríamos haber acabado en otra dictadura y ni la Unión Europea ni la OTAN se hubieran preocupado por nosotros – no tenemos petróleo más allá del aceite de oliva. Así que lo protegemos, nuestra constitución lo hace, ¡por supuesto! ¿Por qué no deberíamos defenderlo de los separatistas, terroristas y mentirosos que quieres echar abajo la sociedad que tanto esfuerzo nos ha costado construir?

I wonder when are the European countries to understand Spain needs to handle the terrorism whole situation itself. We don’t watch out what the UK does about the IRA despite de fact we try to learn something from them. What I want to mean is we should have enough sovereignty to decide who is a politician and who represents a terrorist band, including the right to punish this behaviors however it is required to.

Me pregunto cuándo los países europeos van a entender que España necesita manejar la situación del terrorismo por sí misma. Nosotros no miramos lo que hace el Reino Unido con el IRA a pesar de intentar aprender algo de ellos. Lo que quiero decir es que necesitamos tener suficiente soberanía para decidir quién es un político y quién un representante de la banda terrorista, incluyendo el derecho de castigar estos comportamientos de la forma que se requiera.

Whether the Otegui’s sentence was fair or not, either the Politic Parties’ law is right or not, this is the path our politicians are following to lead the Basque Country to peace and with them the rest of us. However, I can’t believe such tortures were real and overall to give the responsibility of them to the king is nothing but false and unfair – he’s not the head of the army anymore.

Fuera la sentencia de Arnaldo Otegui justa o no, o la Ley de Partidos sea correcta o no, este es el camino que nuestro políticos están siguiendo para conducir a la sociedad vasca a la paz, y al resto de nosotros con ellos.  De todas formas, no puedo creer que semejantes torturas fueran reales, y dar responsabilidad al rey por ellas es de todo menos justo y verdadero – no es el jefe del ejército  en realidad.
