What we know and what we don't about the terrorism in Spain / Qué sabemos y qué no sobre el terrorismo en España

This lines aim to be a draft of the terrorism whole situation in Spain. Within the last thirty years, this country has suffered the violence and the fear from ETA. Nevertheless, abroad this story's depiction  has been, and somewhere still, very diverse. Some countries worked out the romantic idea of a cluster fighting against the dictator for the freedom. Nothing further to resemble the real turmoil of the society, even if the spanish population can withstand and struggle for its welfare bravely.

Estas líneas pretenden ser un acercamiento a la situación del terrorismo en España. En los últimos treinra años, este país ha sufrido la violencia y el miedo a ETA. Sin embargo, en el extranjero la visión de esta historia ha sido, y en algunos lugares continúa siendo, muy diferente. Algunos países tienen en mente la romántica de idea de un grupo luchando contra el dictador por la libertad. Nada más lejos que asemejarse al verdadero sufrimiento de la sociedad, aunque la población española puede aguantar y luchar por su bienestar con inmensa bravura.

The País Vasco is a region located in the North edge of Spain, limiting with France, known as The Only One the arab's couldn't conquer. To approach to their reality we should deal with the double-headed shape the terrorist organization ETA states. Its hierachy consists of a 'military arm' and a 'political arm'. Although they actually murder people to aim independence, their political party -named 'abertzale'- for years was allowed to join the elections and eventually had representation in councils. While the army terrified the population, the 'abertzale' party took part on the public decisions. Therefore in 2007, one of the greatest democratic efforts this country have ever done, the Parliament issued the 'Parties law', which doesn't allow the violence-supporting parties to be in the electoral process. As a direct consecuence, the ETA political arm got illegalized and the organization lost most of its strength.

El País Vasco es una región situada en el borde norte de España, haciendo frontera con Francia, conocida como la única que los árabes no pudieron conquistar. Para acercarnos a su realidad tenemos que lidiar con la forma bicéfala qe la organización terrorista ETA presenta. Su jerarquía está compuesta por un "brazo militar" y un "brazo político". Aunque de hecho asesinan gente para lograr la independencia, su sección política - la izquierda abertzale - se presentó a las elecciones durante años, y finalmente obtuvieron representación en asambleas y ayuntamientos. Mientras su "ejército" aterrorizaba a la población, los 'abertzales' tomaban parte en las decisiones públicas. Es por ello que en 2007, en uno de los mayores esfuerzos democráticos que este país ha realizado, el Parlamento promulgó la 'Ley de Partidos', que no premite a las asociaciones que apoyen la violencia formar parte del proceso electoral. Como consecuencia directa, el brazo político de ETA fue ilegalizado.

No more violence - Stop the violence

Furthermore, the spanish police in colaboration with other european forces - above all the french one - have managed to imprison a good number of ETA's head members in the last few years. Nowadays the terrorist group is seriously reduced, although there is a high rate of new generation relief. Thus, they eager to join the public spaces  once again, and these days' headlines talk about the brand-new party they brought out. Sortu, as it's named, apparently follows the democratic rules of fair play.

Además, la policía española en colaboración con otras fuerzas europeas - sobre todo la francesa - se las ha ingeniado para encarcelar a un buen número de cabecillas de ETA en los últimos años. Hoy en día el grupo terrorista está seriamente reducido, a pesar de que hay una gran tasa de relevo generacional. Hoy, mermados, quieren hacerse de nuevo con los espacios públicos, y los titulares de estos días hablan acerca del nuevo partido que han sacado. Sortu, así es su nombre, aparentemente sigue las reglas del juego democrático.


But, are they really aiming to give up the violence and the terror? They assert that they refuse this behaviour, but don't condemn it at all. So there comes the doubt whether they want the peace or not. However uncertain the situation is, reachs a peak on terrorist-fighting in Spain, and our goverment can't let it go so easily, but handle it extremely carefully.

Pero ¿realmente quieren terminar con la violencia y el terror? Afirman que reniegan de este tipo de comportamiento, pero no lo condenan. Así viene la duda entre si realmente quieren la paz o no. Ahora sí, por muy incierta que sea la situación, alcanza un tope en la lucha antiterrorista en España, y nuestros gobernantes no pueden dejarla pasar tan fácilmente, sino manejarla con extrema precaución.
